I’m an exile! Who are you?
I found a site where you can write your own Emily Dickinson “I’m nobody! Who are you?” poem (mad lib style).
Here is Emily Dickinson’s version:
I’m nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there’s a pair of us — don’t tell!
They’d banish us, you know.
How dreary to be somebody!
How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
To an admiring bog!
Here is mine (after some necessary fiddling):
I’m an exile! Who are you?
Are you an exile, too?
Then there’s a universe of us — don’t tell!
They’d colonize, you know.
How squandered to be somebody!
How gyred, like a cog
To yield your thoughts the livelong day
To an insatiable bog!

Cool! I’ll have to try it.
I don’t think I did it right.
I’m Napoleon ! Who are you?
Are you her , too?
Then there ’s a radio of us — don’t tell!
They ‘d watch us, you know.
How ugly to be somebody!
How yellow , like a trunk
To print your barbell the livelong day
To an cold bog!
OK, now I see. You tweaked yours.
Hey Wanda!
I had to play with it to get it to make sense. I like the idea of replacing nobody with Napoleon.
I had a problem with the structure of the questions. But here goes, more a variation than anything else. I like Wanda’s idea.
I’m unidentified! Who are you?
Are you a mereness , too?
Then there ’s a secret of us — don’t tell!
They’d confess us, you know.
How bold to be somebody!
How immodest, like a promise
To lose your best the livelong day
To an ordinary bog!
Hey Terry,
A mereness, I like that…and they’d confess us.
I keep fussing with my version. I had ordinary bog, too, for a while. There is likely a more effective mad lib set up for this sort of thing. It was fun to fiddle with it, though.
Yes. it was fun. good to hear from you, too.
oh this is so much fun!
i love such mind games… i think i’ll put mine on my blog (with a link to you) to let other friends know about it…
————–
love yours very much…. very meaningful and deep as usual…
‘a universe of us’
‘They’d colonize’
‘How squandered’
‘How gyred, like a cog’
Hmmm… great ideas… thought-provoking images…
i loved especially ‘a universe of us’….
This has given me an idea for a post. :)
Followed you here from Kelly’s blog. I’ll be back for more reading! Thanks!
I’m Kelly ! Who are you?
Are you a hobo , too?
Then there ’s a cosmos of us — don’t tell!
They ‘d eat us, you know.
How static to be somebody!
How domestic , like a dog
To preach your prattle the livelong day
To an drunken bog!
Thanks Human Being.
I love seeing all of the variations. Yours provided grist for the mill, as well. Thanks for playing. :)
Happy to hear it, Chani.
Thanks for coming to take a look.
Kelly, Good to see you.
I liked the “are you a hobo, too?” line…and “how static to be somebody.” Preaching to the intoxicated.
This poem has many interesting permutations.
I’ll have to go find this. Hi, Ivy. I miss you, but you’ve started a trend (No — not a “poetry must makes sense” trend.) I suspect we on the cusp of a mass exodus from the Orange Place… which means I need to learn how to use my WP, srsly. =)
I’m Confused! Who are you?
Are you this, too?
Then there’s an uncertainty of us — don’t tell!
They’d flee us, you know.
How disorienting to be somebody!
How muddled, like a fog
To seek your blindness the livelong day
To an unfamiliar bog!
Hey Funkmistress,
Good to see you on the other side. WP is pretty straightforward. Click around…it almost never blows up.
Mornin’ Shadodottir,
Thanks for playin’. I liked “there’s an uncertainty of us” and “how disorienting to be somebody!” Seeking your blindness is an interesting (and relevant) phrase. A pleasure to see you here.
hi dear dear friend,Ivy…
thanks for your encouraging words…
i came here again to thank you for presenting this challenge to us… some friends have written their versions and i’ve put their links there in my blog… the versions i read here are wonderful, too…
this is really a great game…
each version i read i feel something new is added to my world and to my being…thanks again to be such a source of wisdom and life…
Thank you, Human Being.
The variations are wonderful.
Yes — I sought my blindness, and I’m pretty sure I’m getting closer all the time!
Good to see you, Shado d.
It’s good to see you here!
And you, Tigereye!
I will go see what you are up to here…
With lots of fiddling:
I’m an empath! Who are you?
Are you an empath, too?
Then there’s a heartbeat of us — don’t tell!
They’d medicate, you know.
How frightening to be unfeeling!
How dull, like a fog
To give your soul the livelong day
To an hungry bog!
Shawn!
Good to see you again.
This experiment does seem to require fiddling. Empath was a good choice. “They’d medicate, you know” is a great line. Thanks for playing. :)
That’s cool! I should show it to Kalessin–they did that poem last year. They had to compare it to two others it had nothing in common with. He didn’t exactly like that part, but he might appreciate making his own–after all, he’s been trying to be an angsty teen since he was six or so….
Hey TCM!
I’d like to see what he comes up with.
I’m disappointed! Who are you?
Are you disappointed, too?
Then there’s a bitterness of us — don’t tell!
They’d trivialize, you know.
How fatuous to be somebody!
How blinding, like a fog
To pretend your joy the livelong day
To a lying bog!
It is fogblinding to be somebody. Clarity comes with shaking off the fetters of somebodiness.
Thanks for posting yours, David.
